About Grasshopper Wilderness Study Area

Located in northeastern Arizona within the Coconino and Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests, the Grasshopper Wilderness Study Area (WSA) encompasses rugged terrain featuring deep canyons, red rock formations, and broad desert highlands. The area is characterized by sandstone cliffs, juniper woodlands, piñon pine forests, and sparse desert vegetation, supporting an array of wildlife including mule deer, elk, and various bird species. The land was designated as a Wilderness Study Area to protect its natural condition, preserving opportunities for backcountry hiking, wildlife observation, and primitive camping. The region’s isolation and limited development create a true wilderness experience with few marked trails, requiring visitors to rely on navigation skills and preparation. Historically, the area lies within ancestral lands of Native American tribes and retains cultural significance, though evidence is limited. Grasshopper WSA is valued for its scenic vistas, quiet environment, and as an important ecological corridor within the Arizona wilderness network. Recreation opportunities include hiking rugged terrain, exploring geological features, and wildlife viewing, with emphasis on Leave No Trace ethics. Visitors can access the WSA via forest roads connecting to nearby highways, but many roads require high-clearance or four-wheel-drive vehicles. The remoteness and lack of facilities make Grasshopper WSA ideal for experienced outdoor enthusiasts seeking solitude and natural beauty.
